Yankees acquire Brendan Ryan from Mariners

The Yankees have acquired shortstop Brendan Ryan from the Mariners, Seattle announced on Tuesday night. The Mariners will receive a player to be named later.

Ryan, age 31, is a poor hitter (career batting line of .238/.300/.320, worse than that over the last two seasons), but he grades out as perhaps the best defensive shortstop in the game today. Here's just a taste of what he can do:

In addition to his having a tremendous first step and sure hands, Ryan's powerful throwing arm allows him to play uncommonly deep in the hole, which, in turn, allows him to get to more ground balls.

Doubtless, Derek Jeter's uncertain status is part of the Yankees' motivation here, as are the occasional defensive lapses of Eduardo Nunez.

Worth noting is that since this trade took place after Aug. 31, Ryan will not be eligible to be a part of the Yankees' postseason roster, should they make it that far.
