During his first plate appearance of the night on Friday, Yankees fulcrum Robinson Cano was faced with an extreme defensive shift by the home-standing Red Sox. Well, know that Mr. Cano is about make a fool out of that shift and everyone who had a hand in its design and implementation. Witness:
That, friends and strangers, is a bunt for a double. And that is Robinson Cano's telling the Sox to take that shift and shove it.
Seriously, though, some excellent "game theory" on Cano's part, as I'm sure the Sox will at least think twice before shifting him the next time up. There's no better way to discourage extreme shifts than occasionally taking what is given, which is what Cano did here in splendid fashion.
