Vladimir Guerrero makes retirement official

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer

It's been a while since Vladimir Guerrero played Major League Baseball. Sept. 28, 2011, in fact, was the last time we saw him in big-league action.

Still, he's worked out for teams and even joined an independent organization in hopes of holding on and possibly getting to 500 homers since. Until now.

"I decided to announce my retirement due to my desire to spend more time with my family," said Guerrero (in Spanish to listindiario.com), "as well as because of the two operations that I've had on my right knee."

Though it's hardly surprising -- as Guerrero certainly wasn't going to appear in the majors again -- it's newsworthy because he has a decent Hall of Fame case.

In a 16-year career, Guerrero hit .318/.379/.553 (140 OPS+) with 449 homers, 1,496 RBI, 1,328 runs, 477 doubles and 181 stolen bases. Oh, and he had a hose. Seriously. Watch this:

Or this:

The nine-time All-Star won the 2004 AL MVP for the Angels, but one of his claims to fame has to be that he was the last great player for the Montreal Expos.

Guerrero's top career comparables, statistically, according to baseball-reference.com are Jeff Bagwell, Larry Walker, Jim Rice, Willie Stargell and Billy Williams.

Since Guerrero hasn't played since 2011, he'll be on the 2017 Hall of Fame ballot, joining Ivan Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez and Jorge Posada as first-timers.
