Encarnacion, 30, will have surgery later this week to repair cartilage damage. He missed a few games with soreness last week and has had on and off problems with the wrist over the years, including hamate surgery in 2009.
In 142 games this year, Encarnacion has hit .272/.370/.534 (145 OPS+) with 36 home runs and 104 RBI. He has more walks (82) and extra-base hits (66) than strikeouts (62), making him one of the game's truly elite sluggers.
Cecil, 27, has been shut down with discomfort. He's been dealing with it for about a month and the team reduced his workload in an effort to make the injury manageable.
Cecil has emerged as a top lefty setup man for Toronto this season. He has pitched to a 2.82 ERA (146 ERA+) with a 3.04 K/BB in 60 2/3 innings this year and was a first time All-Star.
The Blue Jays are also without Jose Bautista (hip), Melky Cabrera (tumor), Maicer Izturis (ankle), Josh Johnson (forearm), Brandon Morrow (forearm), Ramon Ortiz (elbow) and Juan Perez (elbow).
