With a single in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday night, Nationals leadoff man extended his hitting streak to 28 games.

That 28-game streak marks the longest in the majors this season -- surpassing the 27-game streak by Rockies' slugger Michael Cuddyer -- and is the longest since Dan Uggla's 33-gamer in 2011.

Also of significance is that Span is exactly halfway to Joe DiMaggio's famed record of 56. Obviously, Span can't get there this season, as the Nationals only have 11 games left. But if he gathers at least one hit in every game the rest of the way, he can take a 38-game hitting streak into next season.

The modern National League record hitting streak is 44 games, which Pete Rose accomplished in 1978. Per several historical accounts, Wee Willie Keeler also had a 44-game hitting streak in 1897.

Span will look to extend the streak to 29 games against Alex Wood and the Braves Wednesday. In three career at-bats against Wood, Span has struck out all three times.
