Raul Ibanez hits No. 300, ties Ted Williams for HRs by 41-year-old

Like M's broadcaster Dave Sims said, that's the 300th home run of Ibanez's career, and that's also his 29th blast of 2013. That's significant because it ties the 1960 record of Ted Williams for most home runs in a season by a 41-year-old.

I'll be the first to admit that I didn't think Ibanez was going to have much of a year. Last season, he was good for nothing more than very occasionally taking advantage of the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium. Another year older and in a far less accommodating home ballpark, Ibanez, I was sure, would struggle as a Mariner. After his big clout on Saturday, though, he's now slugging a highly respectable .503 in what's been a down year for offense.

Ibanez is, by all accounts, a swell guy and a stand-up teammate, so here's to his age-defying efforts this season.
