The Phillies have removed the interim tag and officially named Ryne Sanderg their new manager, the team announced. He signed a three-year contract that includes a club option for 2017.

“We are pleased to announce that Ryne Sandberg will be our major league manager,” said GM Ruben Amaro Jr. in a statement. “We feel that Ryne has the qualities and leadership skills that are essential to move our club and our organization forward. Ryne's six years as a minor league manager, Hall of Fame credentials and work ethic warrant this opportunity.”

Sandberg, 54, replaced Charlie Manuel on August 16. The team has gone 18-16 under his watch. He opened the year as the club's third base coach, which was his first big league coaching position. Sandberg had previously served in the Phillies and Cubs farm system. Philadelphia says he has a career 439-409-1 (.517) managerial record in the minors in their release.

A 2005 Hall of Fame inductee, Sandberg played 15 years for the Cubs and retired as a .285 career hitter with 282 home runs and 1,061 RBI in 2,164 games.
