Twins shut down Joe Mauer for rest of season due to concussion

Twins catcher Joe Mauer hasn't played since Aug. 19 due to lingering effects of a concussion he suffered after taking a foul ball off his catcher's mask. And he won't play again in 2013. Twins general manager Terry Ryan made it official Monday afternoon.

There aren't plans to move Mauer out from behind the plate, however, as both Ryan and Mauer told reporters the plan was for him to be the everyday catcher for the Twins in 2014 (MLB.com).

Mauer, 30, hit .324/.404/.476 with 35 doubles, 11 homers, 47 RBI and 62 runs in 113 games this season. He made the All-Star team for the sixth time in his career.

Mauer is due $23 million per season through the 2018 campaign.

Though the Twins have long since been eliminated from playoff contention, they are relevant this week. They have three games against the Tigers and four against the Indians.
