Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has been diagnosed with a torn medial patella tendon ligament in his left knee, per GM Dan Duquette (source: Eduardo A. Encina via Twitter). That likely means Machado will be laid up for six to eight weeks before he can undertake light running. Obviously, he should be ready for the start of the 2014 season, barring setback. The good news, of course, is that Machado's ACL was not damaged.

Machado orginally suffered the injury on Monday against the Rays after he landed awkwardly on the first-base bag. Here's the play in question:

Machado underwent an MRI, and on Tuesday those MRI results were examined by a Johns Hopkins radiologist, who then consulted with the team physician.

This season, the 21-year-old Machado batted .283/.314/.432 (100 OPS+) with an AL-leading 51 doubles in 710 plate appearances. He also established himself as perhaps the best defensive third baseman in baseball.
