Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier has been dealing with a left ankle sprain since mid-September, and that injury isn't healing as hoped. As Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times tweeted on Wednesday, Ethier returned to L.A. to have his ankle examined.
Since Ethier has logged only one plate appearance since suffering the injury, this tweet from Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register should come as no great surprise:
Mattingly on concern level that Ethier won't be available for playoffs: "Yeah, I'm a little worried about him."— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) September 26, 2013
If Crawford and Kemp do remain healthy and in top form for the balance of the season (as my colleague Matt Snyder recently wrote, Kemp looks like his old self lately), then Ethier's loss won't be as acutely felt. On the other hand, Ethier's a left-handed bat who's hitting .278/.382/.503 in the second half, and even a team like the Dodgers, what with their impressive outfield depth (Yasiel Puig perhaps bears mentioning), would miss that.
