Bad news for the Reds: Ace Mat Latos won't be able to start against the Pirates in Tuesday's NL wild-card game because of bone chips in his elbow, the AP reports. However, the Reds hope that Latos will improve in time to make a start in the NLDS round, should they win in Pittsburgh.

"Most pitchers have little bone chips or fragments in their elbows," said Reds manager Dusty Baker. "Sometimes they move around. Sometimes they get back in that slot and stay there. His [Latos's] is a little sore."

Instead, the Reds will start Johnny Cueto opposite Francisco Liriano. The winner of that game will advance to face the Cardinals in the NLDS.

This season, the 25-year-old Latos has pitched to a 3.16 ERA (121 ERA+), 1.21 WHIP and 3.22 K/BB ratio in 210 2/3 innings of work. As for Cueto, he owns 2.82 ERA across 11 starts. Cueto missed almost half the season because of a lat injury, but since returning has given up only one earned run in 12 innings.
