The Cardinals pounded the Pirates in Game 1 of their NLDS matchup on Thursday, but if you thought it would have any carryover effect, you were sorely mistaken. Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2 on Friday with his first career postseason hit:
One inning later, third baseman Pedro Alvarez increased the lead to 3-0 Pirates with a monster two-run home run to dead center field:
Cole was the first overall pick in the 2011 draft and Alvarez was the second overall pick in the 2008 draft. However, as the Pirates showed in the late 1990s and early 2000s, having high draft picks does not automatically equal success.
