PHOTO: The enthusiasm of Pirates fans (in 1960)

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer

MORE: Joe Kelly-Francisco Liriano pitching preview | Game 3 lineups

Thus far, one of the most engaging sub-plots of the 2013 postseason has been the zeal with which Pirates fans have embraced their team's belated return to October baseball. This example from their wild-card triumph over the Reds comes swiftly -- and deafeningly -- to mind ...

We also heard tales of Pirates rooters lining the Clemente Bridge (and jumping off said bridge) in order to snare a glimpse of the game.

And speaking of watching the game from far-flung places, here's the classic Life Magazine image from Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, in which the Pirates toppled the mighty Yankees on Bill Mazeroski's impossible bottom-of-the-ninth home run ...

Those are Pitt students perched high atop the Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh campus, and far below at Forbes Field -- 530 feet and 42 stories below -- are the freshly minted champs, the 1960 Pirates. Good seats, if you can get them.

You've almost certainly seen this photo before, but it's one I never tire of stumbling across.
