The Mariners tried to bring back former manager Lou Piniella to fill their current managerial opening, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. They wanted Piniella so badly, in fact, that Rosenthal had a source who called the pursuit a "full-court press."

Piniella declined the job offer because he doesn't want to manage anymore. Via foxsports.com:

“I talked to them about the job, but that's it,” Piniella told FOX Sports on Thursday night. “There was nothing else to it. It was just conversation, nothing more.”

Piniella, 70, said he does not want to manage again.

“No,” he said. “I'm happy doing what I'm doing, which is watching a little baseball, doing a little bit of television for the Yankees, 15 games or so a year. It keeps me involved a bit.”

Piniella was the Mariners' skipper from 1993 through the 2002 season, after which he was traded to the Tampa Bay (then) Devil Rays for Randy Winn. With the Mariners, Piniella went 840-711, making the playoffs four times -- the only four times in Seattle history -- and getting to the ALCS three times but never advancing to the World Series.

Piniella's 2001 Mariners tied the 1906 Cubs for the most wins in a season in baseball history with 116, though they were bounced in the ALCS by the Yankees.

Per CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman, the Mariners are considering A's bench coach Chip Hale, Giants bench coach Ron Wotus and former Reds manager Pete Mackanin among many others.
