BOSTON -- For the second straight night, a Tigers pitcher no-hit the Red Sox through 5+ innings of play. Max Scherzer did the honors in Game 2, with nine strikeouts and two walks to his credit before Shane Victorino singles with two outs in the sixth.

Scherzer, 29, threw 88 pitches before allowing the hit, so his pitch count was in decent shape. His season-high pitch count is 123 pitches on Sept. 25 while his career-high is 127 pitches back in August 2011. He threw at least 110 pitches 13 times this year, including in Game 1 of the ALDS.

In 32 starts this year, Scherzer went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA (145 ERA+) and league-leading 0.97 WHIP in 214 1/3 innings. He's very likely going to win the AL Cy Young Award after having never received a vote in his career to date.

Anibal Sanchez threw six hitless innings against the Red Sox in ALCS Game 1 on Saturday night before giving way to the bullpen. Close Joaquin Benoit allowed a one-out single to Daniel Nava in the ninth inning,

There have only been two no-hitters in postseason history: Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series and Roy Halladay's no-hitter in the 2011 ALDS. Cardinals rookie Michael Wacha took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in the NLDS against the Pirates last week.

Justin Verlander was the last Tigers pitcher to throw a no-hitter. He did it in May 2011. The Red Sox have not been no-hit since Chris Bosio of the Mariners got them back in 1993.
