(Un)Happy 10th Anniversary: Alex Gonzalez boots grounder for Cubs

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer

It was 10 years ago today that the Cubs blew Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS, thwarting their attempt to make the World Series for the first time 1945 and possibly winning it for the first time since 1908. Outlets everywhere else are concentrating on a certain fan who shall remain nameless in these parts -- because fans don't cost teams games. Players do.

And after that certain fan incident happened, this did:

Please take note of the score, the number of outs and the ease with which that double play should have been turned. Now try and tell me you actually blame that loss on a freaking fan. Ridiculous. Alex Gonzalez's name should be alongside Bill Buckner's.

The Cubs would go on to eventually allow eight runs in the eighth inning and then lose Game 7, going home with a sour taste in their mouths. In turn, many morons blamed a fan -- and many non-Cubs fans claim "all" Cubs fans blame said fan, which is also unfair and inaccurate.

Anyway, this is the 10-year anniversary of that game. Enjoy it, non-Cubs fans who take part in such schadenfreude.
