Bobby Valentine on Red Sox: 'Why wouldn't I root for them?'

Even with all the vitriol aimed at Bobby Valentine after last year's 93-loss season, the now estranged skipper says he's still rooting for the Red Sox to defeat St. Louis in the Fall Classic.

“I picked them to win the division, the ALDS, the ALCS and now the World Series,” he said in a revealing piece from The Boston Globe. “I'm rooting them on. The [12] guys left on that team that I managed were all good guys. I enjoyed all of them so why wouldn't I root for them?”

Valentine, who's now the athletic director at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, also lamented his reputation in Boston, which cut ties with the manager after one injury-plagued, tumultuous season.

“It's the easy thing to do. It's easy to get on me. What am I gonna do? I'm 63 years old, life is good,” he said. “I'm enjoying running a college program.”

Valentine hasn't been back to Fenway since he was fired, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been impressed with how John Farrell has reversed Boston's course.

“He's obviously done a great job. I haven't heard one negative thing. I haven't seen anything weird,” Valentine mentioned, before dropping one more noteworthy quote.

“I'd like to think that if I came back for my second year that, given the changes and improvements, I would've been able to do the same thing.”

We'll just let that marinate for a while. Maybe with some chicken and beer.
