PHOTO, VIDEO: Jon Lester may have doctored the ball in Game 1

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester carved up the Cardinals in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night, striking out eight in 7 2/3 scoreless innings. He was brilliant.

During the game, a minor league pitcher in the Cardinals' system named Tyler Melling noticed Lester appeared to have some kind of substance (Vaseline?) on the inside of his glove and tweeted out a photo. His tweet has since been deleted, but here's another photo:

That could very easily just be some kind of discoloration on his glove. But, just to make this maybe-controversy extra juicy, here's video of Lester very clearly touching the location of that maybe-glob of goo:

Inconclusive evidence, certainly nothing as obvious as Kenny Rogers circa 2006, but enough to make you wonder. It's probably worth noting that Lester's counterpart, Adam Wainwright, didn't exactly deny doctoring the ball during an interview last summer. Lots of guys do it.

I'm sure Lester will be asked about this at some point and I'm sure he'll deny it. Red Sox manager John Farrell too. But it's something worth monitoring. If the series goes five games and Lester pitches again, it'll be interesting to see if the substance is still on his glove. Heck, it'll be interesting to see if the substance isn't there too.
