Report: Cubs to interview Eric Wedge for manager's job

The Cubs, who are in the process of finalizing a list of candidates to replace the recently fired Dale Sveum, intend to interview former Indians and Mariners manager Eric Wedge next week, reports Gordon Wittenmeyer of the Chicago Sun-Times.

As Wittenmeyer writes, Wedge is the sixth identified candidate for the managerial vacancy. CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman previously reported on the Cubs' interest in Joe Girardi, who has since re-upped with the Yankees, and former Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch. Other candidates include Padres bench coach Rick Renteria -- the possible frontrunner -- Rays bench coach Dave Martinez, former Nationals and Indians manager Manny Acta and Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo.

As for Wedge, he's compiled a 561-573 managerial record across 10 full seasons with the Indians and Mariners. In 2007, Wedge guided Cleveland to 96 wins and an AL Central title, and in doing so he was named AL Manager of the Year.
