Cardinals all over Jake Peavy in Game 3, score two in the first inning

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

Prior to World Series Game 3, Red Sox right-hander Jake Peavy called it the biggest start of this career. Needless to say, the first inning did not go according to plan. Four of the first five batters picked up singles and the only exception was Carlos Beltran's sacrifice bunt. Matt Holliday opened the scoring by driving in Matt Carpenter ...

... then Yadier Molina continued it by driving in Holliday ...

... to give St. Louis an early 2-0 lead. David Freese lined out to right following Molina's single, so five of the first six Cardinals to bat hit the ball hard. Again, the only exception was Beltran's bunt.

The Red Sox had left-hander Felix Doubront warming just in case things got really out of hand. Clay Buchholz is scheduled to start Game 4 on Sunday but has been battling some fatigue. Boston surely does not want to use their top long man in Game 3 with Buchholz questionable.
