VIDEO: Jonny Gomes' 3-run shot breaks World Series Game 4 open

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

This has not been a good postseason for Jonny Gomes. The bearded platoon outfielder went 5-for-33 (.152) with nine strikeouts in his first dozen playoff games and was only in the Game 4 starting lineup because Shane Victorino's back was acting up.

Turns out Victorino being scratched was the best thing to happen to the Red Sox. With two on and two outs in the sixth inning, Gomes broke a one-all tie with a three-run home run off Cardinals ground ball machine Seth Maness:

The first two batters of the inning made outs, so the Red Sox rallied for those three runs with two outs. Dustin Pedroia singled and David Ortiz was unintentionally intentionally walked before Gomes hit.

That's a series-altering homer right there.
