Snyder: Renteria unexciting, but should prove a solid hire

News broke Wednesday night that the Cubs were set to name now-former Padres bench Rick Renteria as their new manager. Thursday, the Cubs made it official with a press release, announcing they have signed him to a three-year deal with two club option years.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Renteria has been the Padres bench coach for the past three seasons. Prior to that he was the first-base coach for three years. He also has eight years of minor-league managing experience in the systems of the Padres and Marlins in addition to having managed Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic last spring.

As a player, Renteria was a utility man, getting playing time in parts of five big-league seasons.

Renteria takes over a Cubs team that finished 66-96 last season, good for last in the NL Central. The club is eyeing contention in the 2015-16 ballpark, and Renteria's task will be to do a better job of bringing along the young talent -- like Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro and some future prospects -- than Dale Sveum did.
