MORE: EOB picks Scherzer for AL Cy Young Award

As expected, Detroit Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer was named the 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner on Wednesday. He received 28 of 30 first place votes to finish ahead of second place Yu Darvish and third place Hisashi Iwakuma.

Scherzer, 29, went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA (145 ERA+) in 32 starts this past season, but his Cy Young case goes way beyond win-loss record. He was top five in the league in ERA, ERA+, innings (214 1/3), strikeouts (240), WHIP (0.97), K/BB (4.28) and WAR (6.7). Scherzer was the best pitcher on the pennant winning team, though ballots were cast before the postseason.

Scherzer is the second Tigers hurler to win the Cy Young in the last three years, joining 2011 Justin Verlander. Denny McLain (1968-69) and Willie Hernandez (1984) have also won Cy Youngs while with Detroit.

Anibal Sanchez and Chris Sale received the other first place votes. The full voting results are available at the Baseball Writers Association of America website.
