Giants, AT&T Park help out with BatKid's amazing, inspiring day

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer

Know that what follows is a cure for pretty much all strains of cynicism, so if you'd prefer to cling to your supply, then you'd best stop reading.

Still here? OK: Five-year-old Northern California native Miles Scott has been battling leukemia for most of his young life (it's presently in remission). Here's Miles (second from right) and his family ...

To honor the courage and strength of Miles and his family, the Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation created a special day for them. And what follows is going to redefine our notions of "special day" ...

Miles is such a fan of BatMan that he wants to be BatKid, and on Friday he indeed became BatKid in the realest possible sense. Pretty much all of San Francisco endeavored to turn downtown into Gotham City -- replete with villains, victims, powerless onlookers and one hero upon whom everything depended. That hero was BatKid.

It goes without saying that BatKid was outfitted with an appropriate conveyance ...

Fortunately for BatKid, little brother was up for playing Robin ...

OK, now down to business. First, BatKid was tasked with untying a fair maiden from some streetcar tracks ...

And stopping the Riddler from robbing a downtown bank vault ...

Then and only then our hero had to make his way to AT&T Park, home of the Giants, where the vile Penguin had kidnapped the team's mascot, Lou Seal ...

Thankfully, BatKid was up for the job ...

At that point, BatKid and a visibly relieved Lou Seal emerged from the ballpark to an adoring crowd ...

And let it be said that the Justice Department's indictment of Mr. Riddler and Mr. Penguin will surely aid in a vigorous prosecution ...

Then it was finally time for our conquering hero to be appropriately honored.

First, the key to the city of San Francisco ...

And then, courtesy of the San Francisco Chronicle, the late edition of the Gotham City Chronicle -- byline of Clark Kent, naturally ...

If there's one image that sums it all up, it's this one ...

Charging uphill, cheered on by thousands, powered by bravery and determination.

Now touch 'em all, BatKid, you've earned it ...
