The Cardinals have extended the contract of manager Mike Matheny for an additional three years on his contract, meaning he's set to be the Cardinals skipper through the 2017 season. The annoucement was made in a press conference in St. Louis Wednesday afternoon.

Matheny was previously signed through next season, due to the Cardinals exercising an option from his initial contract, so the three-year extension covers the 2015-17 seasons.

Matheny, the 43-year-old former catcher, has gone 185-139 in his first two seasons as a manager, taking his team to Game 7 of the NLCS in his first go-round and getting to Game 6 of the World Series this past season. He finished fourth in NL Manager of the Year voting this season after finishing fourth last season.
