The Phillies will name Bob McClure as their new pitching coach, the team announced on Thursday. The Phillies settled on McClure after reportedly being turned down by, variously, Pete Vuckovich, Jim Benedict and Roger McDowell.

McClure, 61, has previously served as pitching coach of the Rockies, Royals and, most recently, Red Sox. McClure was promoted to pitching coach by the Sox in December of 2011 but then let go in August of 2012.

"Bob brings a wealth of experience to our staff," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg in a statement. "We talked to many good candidates and couldn't be more pleased to add ‘Mac' as our pitching coach."

As a pitcher, McClure spent parts of 19 seasons in the majors, and 10 of those came with the Brewers. Of his 698 career games, 625 came in relief. Over that span, he went 68-57, pitched to a 3.81 ERA (102 ERA+) and recorded 52 saves.
