MORE: FA tracker: position players | FA tracker: pitchers's Jon Heyman reports that the Royals have signed free agent left-hander Jason Vargas to a four-year contract worth a total of $32 million.

Vargas, age 30, spent last season with the Angels and pitched to a 4.02 ERA (94 ERA+), 2.37 K/BB and 1.39 WHIP in 150 innings. For his career, he owns 4.30 ERA and 92 ERA+ across parts of eight major-league seasons. In 2013, he missed significant time because of a blood clot in his shoulder.

The Royals were in need of rotation help given the likely departure of free agent Ervin Santana. Vargas figures to slot in the Kansas City behind ace James Shields and perhaps returning right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, assuming Santana signs elsewhere.
