The Angels have signed free agent relief pitcher Joe Smith to a three-year deal worth $15.75 million, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman.

Smith, a 29-year-old sidewinder, had a 2.29 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 54 strikeouts in 63 innings last season. He's been very consistent and effective for the Indians, especially in the past three seasons, when he's compiled a 2.42 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 197 innings in the 2011-13 seasons.

Smith has also been very good at stranding inherited baserunners the past two seasons, allowing only 15 of his 70 inherited runners to score.

The Angels have finally added a good bullpen piece with this relatively inexpensive deal. They ranked 26th in bullpen ERA last season and haven't added a big-time reliever so far, so a signing like this was definitely needed. Smith now joins Dane De La Rosa, Sean Burnett, newly-acquired Fernando Salas and Kevin Jepsen as the bridge to closer Ernesto Frieri.
