The Dodgers have signed free agent right-hander Dan Haren to a one-year contract worth $10 million, Jon Heyman of confirms. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports first reported the deal. The contract, which has been finalized, includes a $10-million option for 2015 that vests with 180 innings pitched. The deal also includes the chance for Haren to make an additional $3 million in performance bonuses in 2014 and 2015 based on innings and games started.

Haren, 33, went 10-14 with a 4.67 ERA (81 ERA+) in 169 2/3 innings for the Nationals last year while missing a little more than two weeks due to shoulder inflammation at midseason. He threw at least 210 innings every year from 2005-11, but he's fallen short of the 180-inning plateau in each of the last two seasons due to injury and ineffectiveness.

The shoulder injury was a turning point in Haren's season. Before going on the DL, he pitched to a 6.15 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 82 innings. After the DL stint, it was a 3.29 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 87 2/3 innings. Haren has always been home run prone (1.5 HR/9 from 2012-13) but spacious Dodger Stadium should help him out a bit.

The Dodgers have a strong front three with Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu. Both Josh Beckett and Chad Billingsley are returning from major surgery, so the back of their rotation has some big question marks. Haren, a Southern California native, will solidify their starting staff, though he does carry some risk at this point of his career.
