The Royals have signed general manager Dayton Moore to a two-year contract extension, the team announced. He is now under contract through 2016.

Moore, 46, took over as the team's general manager in May 2006. He had been an assistant general manager with the Braves prior to that. Moore interviewed for the Red Sox's general manager job in November 2005, before Theo Epstein agreed to return.

Under Moore, the Royals developed homegrown players like Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Luke Hochevar, Aaron Crow, Salvador Perez and Greg Holland, among others. Moore selected Joakim Soria in the 2006 Rule 5 Draft and swung both the Zack Greinke and James Shields trades.

The Royals went 62-100 in 2006, Moore's first partial season at the helm. They went 86-76 in 2013, the franchise's best season since the strike-shortened 1994 campaign. Kansas City's winning percentage has improved every year since 2009 and they're an early/trendy pick for a postseason berth in 2014.
