Pirates prospect Evan Chambers passes away at 24

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

Sad news out of the Pirates organization: minor league outfielder Evan Chambers passed away in his sleep over the weekend. He was only 24. The team is working on a statement but players Tony Sanchez and Phil Irwin both confirmed the news on Twitter.

Chambers was the team's third round pick in the 2009 draft. He was a career .227/.361/.351 hitter in parts of five minor league seasons, though he only appeared in four games in 2013 due to a foot injury.

Baseball America ranked Chambers as the 26th best prospect in the Pirates' organization as recently as 2012. "Chambers has one of the highest offensive ceilings in the system," wrote the publication in their 2012 Prospect Handbook.

Condolences go out to Chambers' family and friends.
