Aoki, age 31, owns a batting line of .287/.355/.399 (103 OPS+) across two major-league seasons. He's capable of playing all three outfield positions, and he's stolen 50 bases in 70 attempts. He'll provide the Royals with some needed outfield depth and on-base skills from the left side of the plate. "Nori is a true professional and performed very well as a member of the Brewers," said Brewers GM Doug Melvin in a statement released by the team. "This was a tough call because of what he brought to our organization on the field and in the clubhouse."
As for Smith, the 24-year-old owns a career ERA of 4.76 in 123 innings across two major-league seasons. However, Smith worked almost exclusively as a reliever in 2013, and he boasts a career ERA of 2.45 and a K/BB ratio of 6.33 when working out of the bullpen.
