Nelson Mandela to get plaque in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park

By Dayn Perry | Baseball Writer

MORE: Broadcast mistakes Mandela for A-Rod

Because of his global significance and also because he once uttered the words, "I am a Yankee," the recently deceased Nelson Mandela will be given a plaque by the Yankees in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium.

As David Waldstein of the New York Times writes, the plaque will be unveiled next season on Jackie Robinson Day -- April 15, when the Yankees host the Cubs. As Waldstein notes, there's precedent in that four other plaques already in place honor non-Yankees: Robinson, the three Popes who visited Yankee Stadium and the victim's of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

More from Waldstein:

When Mandela visited a packed Yankee Stadium on June 21, 1990, the concert featured the musicians Richie Havens, Tracy Chapman, Mighty Sparrow and Judy Collins. He placed a Yankees cap on his head, Mayor David Dinkins draped a team jacket over his shoulders, and Mandela declared, “You know who I am. I am a Yankee.”

The Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who is also honored in Monument Park, was said to have been so pleased with Mandela's declaration that he did not charge the city for having hosted the event.
