Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro made the announcement, as Ordonez, a native of Venezuela, was one of the winners among the 335 elections held on Sunday. According to the AP, “the socialist president has turned to celebrity candidates such as the six-time All-Star to overcome rising anger with his handling of the economy.” Maduro earned the presidency following the death of Hugo Chavez.
The city of Sotillo is home to around 250,000 residents.
Ordonez, 39, retired a year ago after an impressive 15-year career that saw him hit .309 with nearly 300 home runs. Throughout that span, he made $133 million with Chicago and Detroit.
