Rays infielder Tim Beckham will miss a significant portion of the 2014 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. He was injured during a workout and surgery is likely, though the team has not finalized a plan as of yet.

Beckham, 23, has not yet lived up to the billing of being the first overall pick in the 2008 draft. He did reach the big leagues for the first time this past September, going 3-for-7 (.429) in five games. Beckham is a career .266/.332/.381 hitter in over 2,700 minor league plate appearances and figured to be in the mix for the team's second base job or a bench spot.

Baseball America ranked Beckham as Tampa Bay's ninth best prospect on Wednesday. "He continues to display above-average bat speed and has shown raw power to all fields, but that hasn't translated to home run power ... He has seen some time at second base in each of the past two seasons and seems better-suited for that position," they wrote in the subsciber-only scouting report.
