The Cubs have agreed to terms with right-handed reliever Jose Veras, reports Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes. CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman confirms the agreement. Heyman adds that the deal will pay Veras a guaranteed $4 million -- $3.85 million for 2014 plus a $150,000 buyout on a $5.5-million option for 2015. The deal, which is pending a physical, also includes a potential $750,000 in incentives.
Veras, age 33, is coming off a 2013 season in which he posted an ERA of 3.02 and a K/BB ratio of 2.73 in 62 2/3 innings for the Astros and Tigers. For his career, he ows an ERA+ of 109, a K/BB of 2.00 and a WHIP of 1.31 across parts of eight major-league seasons.
Veras will likely open the season as the Cubs' closer.
