The Reds have signed Chien-Ming Wang to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training. His representatives at Octagon announced the signing in a press release.

Wang, 33, won 19 games in both 2006 and 2007 for the Yankees, but he has struggled greatly and battled injuries since getting hurt running the bases during interleague play in 2008. He has 6.60 ERA (63 ERA+) in 163 2/3 innings since then while having surgery to repair a torn shoulder capsule.

In six starts for the Blue Jays this past season, Wang went 1-2 with a 7.67 ERA (54 ERA+) in 27 innings. He did use his trademark sinker to get a ground ball 58.0 percent of the time. Wang managed a 2.87 ERA in 109 2/3 innings at Triple-A in 2013.

Cincinnati's rotation is pretty well set with Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Homer Bailey, Mike Leake and Tony Cingrani. David Holmberg, who came over in the Ryan Hanigan trade, figures to serve as the sixth starter. Wang is added depth more than anything. He doesn't really allow the club to trade Bailey for a center fielder, for example.
