The White Sox and left-hander Scott Downs have agreed to a one-year contract worth $4M with a vesting option for 2015, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has confirmed. He will earn $3.75 million in 2014 and the option is worth $4 million with a $250,000 buyout.
Downs, 37, had a 2.49 ERA (155 ERA+) and a 1.48 WHIP in 43 1/3 innings for the Angels and Braves in 2013. The veteran southpaw held left-handed batters to a .259/.333/.296 (98 OPS+) batting line with a 2.88 K/BB in 90 plate appearances.
Chicago has remade their bullpen a bit in recent weeks. First they signed right-hander Ronald Belisario, then they traded closer Addison Reed to the Diamondbacks. Downs will take over as the team's primary lefty.
