The Nationals have signed veteran infielder Jamey Carroll to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. He will compete for a bench job in camp.

Carroll, 39, hit .211/.267/.251 (45 OPS+) in 249 plate appearances with the Twins and Royals last season. He mustered a .268/.343/.317 (86 OPS+) batting line in 537 plate appearances with Minnesota in 2012.

Carroll will compete with the incumbent Danny Espinosa for a bench job, the spot vacated by Steve Lombardozzi. Lombardozzi was sent to the Tigers in the Doug Fister trade.

The Expos originally drafted Carroll in 1996. He spent the first four years of his career with the franchise and was with the team when they moved to Washington in 2005.
