On Saturday morning, Alex Rodriguez was handed a 162-game suspension from arbitrator Fredric Horowitz that will sideline him for all of 2014. He won't be allowed to play in MLB this coming season barring a surprise ruling from a federal court.

Major league baseball is off the table, but what about an independent league? The Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League are open to adding A-Rod for the summer. Here's what the team president told Mark Herrmann of Newsday:

"While some MLB suspensions have been honored by the Atlantic League in the past, if Alex Rodriguez were unable to participate in the Major Leagues this season, we would be open to exploring giving him a chance to play, stay sharp and compete against a high level of competition while helping the Ducks chase a third consecutive championship," Michael Pfaff, the Ducks president and general manager, said Saturday in an email.

The Yankees would have to give A-Rod permission to play for the Ducks since he is still under contract and there isn't much reason to think they'll let him. Teams in Japan and Korea usually honor MLB suspensions as well, so it will be very tough for Rodriguez to play this year unless the Yankees release him.

The Ducks are essentially the Yankees of independent baseball, scooping up whatever big name players they can get their hands on. They employed Jose Canseco once upon a time, as well as other former big leaguers like Dontrelle Willis, Bill Hall, Lew Ford, Edgar Alfonzo, Carlos Baerga, Armando Benitez, Richard Hidalgo and Sidney Ponson.
