You'll recall that former Mets INF/OF Jordany Valdespin has previously established himself as something less than a "solid baseball citizen." Now, we have yet another data point that suggests Mr. Valdespin has some maturing yet to do.
Aaron Cornielle of MLB Nation writes that Valdespin recently quit on his Dominican winter league team after he was pinch-hit for in a playoff game. A radio show co-hosted by Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes originally broke the news. Here's the relevant tweet in Spanish:
NOTICIA: Yordanny Valdespín abandonó al Licey y una fuente del equipo le dijo al Depto de Averiguaciones que duda vuelva a jugar— GrandesenlosDeportes (@GrandesESPNRD) January 14, 2014
Prior to going AWOL, Valdespin had put up a regular-season OPS of just .612 for Tigres del Licey.
This past season in MLB, Valdespin was suspended 50 games for his ties to the Biogenesis scandal and subsequently cut loose by the Mets. In December, the Marlins signed him to a minor-league contract.
