The Astros have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent right-hander Jerome Williams pending a physical, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has confirmed. Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish first reported the deal. The physical is set for Wednesday.
Williams, age 32, is coming off a 2013 season in which he posted a 4.57 ERA (82 ERA+) and 1.95 K/BB ratio in 169 1/3 innings for the Angels. Across parts of eight major-league seasons, Williams has an ERA+ of 94 in 155 games, 117 of which have been starts. Provided the deal gets finalized, Williams is likely to slot in the Houston rotation behind Scott Feldman, Jared Cosart and Brett Oberholtzer.
The Astros, who are coming off a 111-loss season in 2013 and are still in the midst of a deep rebuild, have been surprisingly active this winter, as they've already signed Feldman and relievers Chad Qualls and Matt Albers and acquired Dexter Fowler and Jesus Guzman via trade.
