The Athletics have signed center fielder Coco Crisp to a two-year contract extension, the team announced. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says it is worth $22.75 million. The deal includes a vesting option for a third year based on plate appearances.

Crisp, 34, was scheduled to become a free agent next offseason. The Athletics exercised his $7.5 million club option earlier this winter and now have him locked up through potentially 2017.

In 131 games last season, Crisp hit .261/.335/.444 (119 OPS+) with 22 doubles, a career-high 22 home runs, 21 stolen bases and nearly as many walks (61) as strikeouts (66). He also grades out an excellent defender according to the various metrics.

With Crisp off the market, the best center fielder currently scheduled to hit the open market next winter is (by far) Colby Rasmus. Brett Gardner will be the second best while Franklin Gutierrez and Chris Young are low-cost alternatives.
