Nationals using aerial drone to record footage of spring training

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

Welcome to the future of spring training. The Nationals have been using an aerial drone to record their workouts these last few days:

As the video shows, the Nats and photographer Donald Miralle are using that little drone to fly over the team's complex and record pretty much everything. Here's the equipment and Miralle showing right-hander Stephen Strasburg how the whole thing works:

Here is one of the first shots taken by the drone:

Pretty cool perspective.

So what kind of super secret spring training program could be the Nationals be planning for the video? Well, nothing that fun. Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post says the footage will be used on the scoreboard at Nationals Park this season.

This wasn't any spying effort from a Grapefruit League rival. Team photographers were gathering material to be shown on the video board at Nationals Park, and the drone enabled them to film from a different perspective. And so the small robot – really, a remote control plane – hummed through the practice. During batting practice at Space Coast Stadium, hitters and coaches kept looking up at it.

“Technology is crazy,” Stephen Strasburg said. “I guess you can down to the hobby store and get one yourself.”

Even though this is only to capture some video for the scoreboard, it's still pretty neat. Props to the Nationals for being creative.
