The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to sign Cuban shortstop Erisbel Arruebarruena to a five-year deal, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

Cuba's 2013 season was split into two halves. Arruebarruena hit .275/.324/.366 in the first half and then .317/.415/.495 in the second half. Still, there are serious concerns among scouting types who have seen him play as to how his bat will play in the bigs.

Baseball America, for example, profiles him as a .220 hitter in Major League Baseball. More from BA:

“He's a premium defender at a premium position with questions on the bat,” said one international scouting director. “If you're built well offensively around the field other than shortstop, you can live with that if you get outstanding defense. But the bat is still the question mark.”

So the signing of Arruebarruena -- at least initially -- seems to be due to the defensive upside. He has drawn comparisons with the glove to Jose Iglesias, who is brilliant in the field.

Here's some footage of the excellent defender Arruebarruena:
