Mets starting pitcher Jonathon Niese had to leave spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Wednesday in order to have an MRI on his left (throwing) shoulder in New York City. This was the same shoulder which caused Niese to miss around nine starts last summer with a partially torn rotator cuff, so it was definitely a cause for concern.

Thursday, Niese and the Mets got good news.

The MRI came back clean and Niese is expected to resume throwing this coming weekend, according to manager Terry Collins (via ESPN New York). He'll need to build himself back up before making a spring start, but consider Niese still on track to open the season with the ballclub.

In 24 starts last season, Niese went 8-8 with a 3.71 ERA (96 ERA+), 1.44 WHIP and 105 strikeouts in 143 innings. He closed strong, though, sporting a 2.70 ERA in his last nine starts.
