Twins third baseman Miguel Sano is the best pure power-hitting prospect in baseball, but he will miss the entire 2014 season due to Tommy John surgery. Immediately before having his elbow rebuilt on Wednesday -- as in literally from his hospital bed before the surgery -- Sano recorded a video for his fans:
Sano, 20, is no stranger to being in front of the camera. He was the subject of the documentary Ballplayer: Pelotero, which shows the process of signing with an MLB club as an amateur player out of Latin America. A follow-up on his climb up the minor league ladder is in the works.
In 123 games split between Single-A and Double-A last season, Sano hit .280/.382/.610 with 30 doubles, 35 home runs and 11 stolen bases. He was expected to take over at the hot corner for the Twins at some point this season before the injury.
Baseball America ranked Sano as the sixth best prospect in all of baseball last month.
