The Red Sox drafted catcher Jon Denney in the third round last year out of Yukon High School in Oklahoma. On Thursday morning, Denney was arrested in Florida on charges of driving with a suspended license. The full story, though, is in the details. Here's this from Yahoo!'s Jeff Passan (click the link for fittingly vacant-eyed mugshot):
Denney, 19, was arrested at 2:22 a.m. Police had pulled him over at 11:57 p.m. Wednesday night after he "accelerated quickly," causing his Ford F-150 Raptor to fishtail, according to the report. Denney furnished a license that was restricted for business and emergency purposes after a DUI in Arkansas, the report said.
When asked by police why he was in the Fort Myers Beach area, Denney, according to police, replied: "Partying and looking to get some [expletive]."
Police issued a citation, according to the report, and Denney called a friend to drive him home.
About two hours later, the report said, police saw Denney enter his truck and drive out of a parking lot. When pulled over and asked why he was driving, Denney said he was giving a woman a ride, according to the report. "Denney then became belligerent and started to cuss" at the police officers, the report said.
According to police, Denney said "he was a Boston Red Sox player and he didn't care [sic] he had money and made more money than we would ever see." When handcuffed, the report said, Denney said "he would be out in no time because of who he played for and that he made three million a year."
Having been a 19-year-old male sub-moron at one point, I fully realize that most 19-year-old males are sub-morons, but these alleged actions are excessive by even those low standards.
As always, driving like a rank fool puts other people in danger, and while I have no doubt that money and power afford judicial privilege on some level, I do doubt that Jon Denney, third-round draft choice, is of the necessary status just yet. Also, someone needs to show him his pay stub and point out that the zeroes to the right of the decimal place don't mean what he seems to think they mean.
Most of all -- and assuming the alleged is true, of course -- Denney needs to grow the hell up if he wants to have a baseball career of any consequence.
Speaking of his baseball career, the Sox are presently deciding how to handle the situation ...
#RedSox will make a decision on Jon Denney's status over the weekend. Their 3rd round draft pick arrested for driving w suspended license.— Michael Silverman (@MikeSilvermanBB) March 14, 2014
Some fact-finding is certainly in order, but if the above is true, then the Sox should cut him. It's amazing what getting drummed out of pro ball, at least for a while, will do for a sense of entitlement such as the one (allegedly!) on display above.
