On Sunday, Mets lefty Jonathon Niese was unable to continue his Grapefruit League start against the Cardinals because of what the team is calling "left elbow discomfort." Niese didn't return to the mound to start the third inning and was replaced by Buddy Carlyle. Some context ...

After the game, the Mets tweeted that Niese would return to New York for an MRI.

Niese, 27, is no stranger to injury troubles. Last season, he spent more than 50 days on the DL with a rotator cuff injury, and this spring he's again been limited by shoulder problems.

For his career, Niese owns an ERA+ of 95 and 2.61 K/BB ratio across parts of six major-league seasons. The Mets had been hoping that Niese, who's in the third year of a five-year contract, would be able to front the rotation this season.
