This time around, it was Niese's elbow. He felt discomfort in his elbow, which forced him to depart his Sunday start prematurely. With the MRI showing no structural damage, Niese has received a cortisone shot and will rest for two to three days before resuming his throwing program. Opening the season on the disabled list is a possibility, but the club doesn't need a fifth starter until April 6. It's possible Niese is ready by then.
Niese had to get an MRI on his shoulder earlier this spring, but has responded well since that issue.
Niese, 27, went 8-8 with a 3.71 ERA (96 ERA+), 1.44 WHIP and 105 strikeouts in 143 innings. He missed around nine starts due to a partially torn rotator cuff, but closed the season on a high note, posting a 2.70 ERA in his final nine outings.
